The following schools have been invited or taken the initiative to participate in the project, some have already conducted their field trips and begun building their first HerbariumPLUS folder.
In the north, we have Noosa District State High School, Sunshine Beach State High, Sunshine Beach State Primary, Cooran Primary, Tewantin Primary, Pomona Primary, St.Andrew Anglican College, Eumundi State School, Cooroy State School, St.Thomas More, St.Theresa, Noosaville State School, Noosa Pengari Steiner School, and Good Shepherd Lutheran College.
In central Sunshine Coast, we have North Arm School; and in the south in the the Meridan College and Pacific Lutheran.
Below are a few snapshots of some of the students in action!
Noosa District State High School having loads of fun in the bush, identifying plants with botanist Stephanie Haslam (far right). Of the 22 plant specimens collected, several are invasive weeds which several students have now developed a keen eye for. To see this list and learn more about them, click here with link to Noosa's Native Plants website.
Noosa Pengari Steiner School also took to the field. Back in the classroom, the fun continued as the students prepared the specimens for their first herbarium, with a little help from project officer Wendy May. Several students even began illustrating the plants on art paper. To see the list of specimens collected and learn more about them, click here with link to Noosa's Native Plants website.
St. Teresa's Catholic College was our first school to learn about the native plants in their nearby bushland around Cranks Creek. With cameras in their hands, some of the students took some rather creative shots as shown here. To see the list of specimens collected and learn more about them, click here.
As you can see, some students may be inspired to make a career out of such a project, becoming a botanical artist, illustrator, nature photographer, landscape designer, botanist or even geologist.
Sunshine Beach Primary School has also made their herbarium folder. To see their plant list, click here.
The Noosa Library school holiday program in June 2009 also provided the opportunity for kids to get involved in our WLNP project. After a morning's plant collection and "bug hunting" in nearby Wallace Park, the kids settled down at the library to document their finds (see photograph).
